Hon. D.P.V.,

RE H.E. THE GOVERNOR'S QUERIES I
MINUTE DATED 6.3.14.
(1). What functions does the Superintendent of
now perform.
(2). I assume that he has been relieved of much
and responsibility by the appointment of a
Inspector of Stores.
In anser to (1), I have to state that I have as có mercial chief of the stores to superintend the whole of the work indicated in my minute of 6.12.12 (0.5.0. 5868/1912)\
particularly where I made a comparison between the Store
Branch of H.H. Naval Yard and that of this Department. It
includes the whole of the clerical work and accounting, as
distinct from the general departmental accounts, and the
issuing of instructions to the Inspector of stores and Head
Storeman and reporting on store matters to the D.P.. and
discussing store business with him when the necessity for
such arises. It is also my duty to direct the carrying out
of all store transport and other work generally.
In answer to (2), I have to state that the appointment
of the European Inspector of Stores has neither relieved me
of work nor responsibility. The appointment has had quite
the opposite effect. When I recommended the appointment in
my minute of 6.12.12, I pointed out that my own duties were
non-technical, and emphasized the fact that there was "plenty
"of scope for improvement in organization and general working
"if funds were provided" to supply a technical assistant at
the store. I enumerated a list (vide my list of certain
duties for the Inspector (a), (b), (0), (d), (e), (f), (g),
(h), (1), (J) & (k), as stated in my minute of 6.12.12 in 0.5.0. 5868/1912) of duties which could not be undertaken
